With slogans like “Justice for Papayita,” family members, friends, and residents demonstrated outside HEB Sendero, where Carlos Gurrola, better known as Papayita, works. He died after allegedly being bullied after his coworkers put degreaser in his drink as part of a “joke.”

On Sunday afternoon, several protesters gathered at HEB Sendero, after previously walking up to 3 kilometers from the Torreón-San Pedro Highway to demand justice for the former janitor.

Videos began to emerge on social media showing protesters, allegedly from Ejido La Concha, Gurrola’s hometown, arriving at the store to demand dialogue.

After spending several hours outside HEB, Carlos Gurrola’s family members were able to engage in dialogue with representatives of the store, as well as the company where Papayita worked. It was agreed that the supermarket chain would present the security videos as evidence to the Coahuila Attorney General’s Office in its Laguna I Delegation.

On September 18, the death of Carlos Gurrola was announced at the IMSS 71 High Specialty Clinic in Torreón, following complications from ingesting degreaser.

Family members reportedly explained that Papayita suffered workplace harassment from his coworkers, who allegedly added degreaser to one of his electrolytes. In addition, family members highlighted on the Facebook page “Justice for Carlos Gurrola” that he received medical attention around 6:00 p.m., when the poisoning occurred around 3:00 p.m.

Diversos manifestantes acudieron a las instalaciones de HEB Sendero, luego de que previamente caminaron hasta 3 kilómetros desde la Carretera Torreón-San Pedro para exigir justicia por el ex trabajador de limpieza.
