The migrant crisis at the US-Mexico border and beyond has sparked a clash between Texas and federal officials. CNN Video shows the latest developments:
- Late Wednesday evening, Texas authorities made the first arrests of migrants at Shelby Park in Eagle Pass, Texas, since the state took over the area last week, an official said. Lt. Chris Olivarez at the Texas Department of Public Safety posted videos on X of migrants being handcuffed and taken away by state officers. He said the migrants were charged with criminal trespassing and would be handed over to US Border Patrol after facing the state charge. He added that the state would continue to curb illegal border crossings.
- The arrests came after the Biden administration gave Texas a deadline to stop blocking the US Border Patrol’s access to a 2.5 mile stretch along the border, including Shelby Park, where a woman and two children drowned in the Rio Grande last week. The Department of Homeland Security sent a letter to Texas’ Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton, saying the state’s actions were unconstitutional and hindered federal operations. The letter also mentioned the deaths as a tragic example of the ongoing migrant crisis.
